A lot of people ask “Why should I use you when the local hand wash can clean my car for a fraction of the price?”. Well there’s a multitude of answers to this question, not least the fact that although the local hand car wash will remove dirt from your car it will most likely inflict damage upon your paint in the process. However in this post I thought I’d focus on an issue I encountered on a resent detail involving a 2013 Suzuki Alto in Southampton. This car had previously been maintained via regular cleans at the local hand car wash. The owner had noticed the black scratches/scuffs on the rear driver’s door around six months ago and assumed they must have occurred when the car was left parked – perhaps a rogue supermarket trolley or something similar was to blame. She’d hoped the local car wash guys could improve the appearance of the scratches with some intensive cleaning but after several tries it looked as though the scuffs were really bonded on. Hence the owner got in touch wanting a more comprehensive clean and also hoping that something could be done about the black scuff marks, which really show up on a white car, without having to resort to a respray.
After a little inspection I could see that the marks were bonded to the paint but they didn’t look like they had damaged it too much. I was fairly confident that some work with the clay bar could see a big improvement and promised the owner that I’d do my best! After I’d cleaned the car in the usual way I set to work with a Zaino Clay Bar using Autoglym Rapid Detailer as a lubricant (which by the way smells of bubblegum – lovely!). After some gentle passes I could see that some of the scuffs were being lifted away and after 5 or 6 persistent passes, ensuring to re-apply lubricant when necessary, the scuffs had been removed completely.
I was chuffed with the results, knowing the owner would be very pleased. She said that the marks had started to really grate on her especially as, being on the driver’s side, she had to look at them every day! I can safely say that this is a process that your local hand car wash won’t delve into and a significant reason for using a properly trained detailer. You really do get what you pay for!
